Message from the
President of DOWAS |
For a safety future human society
by deep ocean water resources
Masayuki Mac Takahashi
Natural resources supported the human society
in the 20th century are now basically questioned because of exhaustion
of most resources and becoming intensified various environmental
problems. It will then be accelerated probable changes from current
resources to new resources such as highly regenerative and excreting less wastes.
One of promising resources for such requirement is deep ocean water (DOW). The
first permanent facility was built in Muroto, Kochi Prefecture, Japan after Hawaii,
USA in 1989 for pumping up DOW for basic research and technology development
as well as challenging small scale multipurpose business utilization, DOW, completely
new type of resource, highly required research and technology development. It
will then be indispensable to own jointly the information collected widely within
Japan and world-wide between the related people, and the Japan DOW Association
established in 1997 played a great part for that purpose. A new type of business
model for DOW resource utilization established in Japan has now been exported
to Taiwan and Korea as well as giving several positive effects in advanced Hawaii,
USA. In 2007, the association developed to the DOW Applications Society (DOWAS),
and has been expected for spending the intensive efforts on research and technology
development on DOW resource utilization as well as active collection of information
widely. Present targets will be establishing active business applications of
low temperature, nutrients and cleanliness of DOW, which could be resulted in
DOW playing an important role such as oil in the 20th century. The present society
having close contact between three of industrial, governmental and educational
worlds has unique characteristics compared to the most of other societies, and
by using this characteristics we would like to make our efforts for aiming the
above mentioned objectives.
